My favorite new picture book of the week: The Skunk by Mac Barnett, with art by Patrick McDonnell (creator of Mutts).
I always thought of Mutts as being a children's story in newspaper comic format (which is one reason that it always bugged me when certain reviewers/writers would say that it was too cutesy, too precious, not mature or edgy enough, etc etc) and McDonnell's artistry is perfectly showcased in every picture book he's illustrated.
In the words of my children's book reviewer alter ego Eva Kelly (five-year-old granddaughter of Christy Kelly, a character in my novels)...
OK, so this is ANOTHER REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY!!! GREAT ONE by that guy who does "Mutts" and it's one of the best ones EVER. It's about a guy who keeps getting followed by a skunk, and he goes everywhere to try and get away, but that skunk just keeps following him, until one day he finally gets a new house and new friends and now the skunk isn't following him, so you know what happens? HE follows the SKUNK! The best one ever! This one should get six or seven stars!!
