..who wonder, when something happens in my country (États Unis) as happened in Charleston, South Carolina on Thursday, when a white racist fuckhead idiot went into a historically African-American church and shot and killed nine parishioners there, I am posting this article, which might be one of the most incisive and insightful commentaries I've ever read regarding race and racial history in the United States, and, in particular, the "Tea Party" here, and how, basically, the Tea Party is nothing more or less than the New Confederacy, which, as the author of this article says, is not a place, but a worldview, a state of mind.
It reminds me of something the historian Barbara Fields said in Ken Burns' epic documentary series The Civil War. "In many places, the Civil War is still being fought," Fields said, "and, sadly, in many ways, it could still be lost."
I cannot take responsibility for the worst, stupidest, narrowest, ugliest among us. But I apologize for them nonetheless. We MUST do better.
Anyway, if you've ever wondered what the CONTEXT is for the ugly racism, the ignorant misogyny, the narrowminded "religion," the fervor and fever about guns, and particularly the outrage and anger about our President, read this article.
